How to look after your hands in the winter

Winter weather is not good news for skin. And while we put lots of time and effort into protecting our face from the harsh climes, we tend to ignore our hands. This often leaves them crying out for moisture – far from the healthy glow we want for our bodies!

Here are five ways you can protect your hands in the cold weather:

1. Invest in a good hand cream

This is the first and foremost tip, guys! Even if you have normal or oily skin, you should make sure your hands stay moisturised. I’ve used Crabtree & Evelyn hand cream my whole life – it’s my mum’s favourite and she has passed her love of it onto me!

Their Ultra-Moisturising Hand Therapy is my favourite – formulated with conditioning shea butter and myrrh extract to condition nails and cuticles, it protects hands from the elements and moisturises to leave them silk soft. Oh, and lightly scented with your favourite fragrance. Mine is Pomegranate, Argan & Grapeseed but Benny’s a fan of the Avocado, Olive & Basil!

2. Wash in lukewarm water

I get it – I like a shower so hot that I come out almost purple. But it’s not ideal for your skin – it can strip as many oils away from your hands. This also applies to just washing your hands during the day.

3. Moisturise straight after washing

This is important – it seals the dampness into the skin. I’ve started to keep a bottle of the Crabtree & Evelyn Tarocco Orange, Eucalyptus & Sage on the bathroom sink – which helps remind me! – and applying post-shower. I love the citrus scent to help perk me up on these dreary January mornings!

4. Overnight moisturise

Your hands need ‘beauty sleep’ too. Sunday is my pamper day, so I often apply the Crabtree & Evelyn Rosewater Overnight Hand Therapy and wear cotton gloves to seal in the moisture until morning. You wake up with baby-soft hands, thanks to the brand’s specially-formulated, concentrated complex of vitamins and amino acids which enhances the skin’s natural barrier and soothes dryness.

5. Protect your hands

When it’s cold and wet outside, wear gloves to protect your hands. And when you don’t – try and apply SPF to your hands if you can… Winter sun can be just as damaging as summer sun!

6. Hydrate

Your skin needs hydration from the inside out. That’s the quickest and most effective way of hydrating our skin. So get that H20 down you!
