I travelled to LA with Discover LA.
This time last week, I had just eaten waffles and pancakes at my 5* star hotel in the Hollywood Hills and was getting my hair and make-up done ahead of attending the Grammys. The ACTUAL Grammys… And now I’m sitting at home in my pyjamas in a flat that doesn’t currently have hot water, wondering how best to heat up my leftover toad in the hole (microwave, oven or pan? So torn).
So to transport me back (as much as physically possible, which isn’t really much), I decided to do an LA diary here. There are A LOT of pictures – I just couldn’t cut them down, I wanted to show you everything I did during the trip…
I flew there with Air New Zealand in my own little pod! It made the 11-hour flight a lot easier…
The Grammys!!! This was the view from our box in the Staples Center… Adele was incredible (we didn’t even notice her sound problems!), as was The Wkend, who I’d never really heard about until then. It was actually pretty impressive to watch everyone live, although I didn’t like the fact that Justin Bieber smashed his guitar. #unnecessary
I had borrowed a stunning dress from Matthew Williamson. Leopard, sequins and feathers, I was worried it was going to be a bit too glam… Until I turned up and realised I could almost be considered underdressed – let me tell you, Grammy attendees go all out!
I paired it with Hugo Boss heels, which are out of shot (sorry!) and a Jimmy Choo clutch borrowed from my super stylish friend Sarah, who was also on the trip.
Working in my room the day after, I needed a huge cup of tea to keep me going, and my Moschino bear/perfume to keep me fun.
I’ve heard SO much about Soul Cycle. Our version is Psycle, or 1 Rebel, but Soul Cycle in Hollywood was a totally different experience… First off, I’ve never seen an exercise group so focused and work so hard – it was motivating, I have to say, although my hangover (sorry mum :/) only permitted so much…! I’ve also never heard so many whoops and cheers during one hour in my life. As you fellow Brits will know, such public displays of passion do not come naturally, but I loosened up pretty quickly and found myself joining in.
Runyon Canyon. This was another of my highlights from the trip. With a morning spare, we decided on a whim to be super LA and do a hike, celeb-style. I’m so glad we did. The views are incredible!
I hate forcing myself to do exercise classes, but this is SUCH a fun way to keep fit, I totally would if I lived there. Plus you can go with a friend and catch up at the same time. Can you tell I’m sold on LA?!
Wearing Replay jacket and ripped jeans.
The next day, we headed to the Warner Brothers Studios for a tour. I had kinda skimmed past this when I read it on the itinerary, but it turned out to be one of the best parts of the trip. This is the iconic water tower and look at the wall on the left – all the detail is painted on! It looks really fake in real life, but comes to life on camera so it’s used as a background for dramas based in earlier periods.
The ACTUAL Friends set! Central Perk, of course. It was strange to see the set in real life (and not only because, to be totally honest, I genuinely thought the series was filmed in New York. Anyone else? No?!) It seems SO much bigger on screen. In real life, it’s quite small and almost 2D. Again, it totally comes to life on camera.
One for the Batman fans. Got to flick this on and off, felt cool and important. That’s about it.
We ate at the Warner Brothers Commissary, a restaurant reserved for employees (read: actors). We spotted a couple of TV stars and ate next to Christopher Nolan… I fought the urge to ask him what the ending of Inception actually meant.
I got sorted! At the Harry Potter exhibition. Not telling you what house I got cos I’m not happy about it.
This street is built for a Wisteria Lane kind of vibe and has been used in tons of films and TV shows. But, each house is also dedicated to one show’s writing team… The one on the right is where Two Broke Girls is written.
All Warner Brother-ed out, we headed to Soho House for a sunset drink with Michelle Trachtenberg, a friend of a friend who also happened to be in Buffy and Gossip Girl (do you like my namedropping?!) – she regaled us with some pretty amazing tales and before we knew it, we were five hours and 6 large gin and tonics in… Time to head home, but not before meeting The Roots, a band that appear on Jimmy Fallon (most recently with Adele when she sang Hello live).
The view from my room! We stayed at the Loews hotel in Hollywood. It was a pretty amazing hotel but the best part was definitely the views – I loved waking up to the Hollywood sign!
The rooftop pool at the hotel. We spent an afternoon there, soaking up the sun so badly needed after a winter in London.
We visited a few shops on Rodeo Drive on the last day. After eating at The BLVD, the restaurant in the Beverly Wiltshire (best truffle fries ever and we *may* have spotted Jason Statham), we headed to Dior to visit the VIP suite. It’s totally divine and I could have spent the rest of the day there. It was so photogenic I had to share a few pics…
The mini Dior living room.
Next up was possibly my favourite part of the trip, a helicopter tour. I was terrified when we first got in – I didn’t sit on the seat properly for about half an hour, I was convinced the helicopter couldn’t take my full weight! But I enjoyed every second and it was beyond fascinating to see all of the crazy Hollywood mansions from above, in all their swimming pool, tennis court and multi-acred glory.
A bit of the view – it was a rainy day, hence the greyness of the photos!
We also passed straight by the Hollywood sign, but I encountered a serious #firstworldproblem when we did – my camera wouldn’t focus, hahaha. It managed to focus expertly on the helicopter window, leaving the actual Hollywood sign a mere blurry spot in the background.
This is how we ended the trip, with a big glass of champagne (mainly to make sure we slept on the night-flight home) in the Star Alliance Lounge at LAX.
If you’re still with me, hi mum! Hahahah. No but seriously, if you managed to get to the end of this, I’m super impressed and thank you/sorry, lol.
Now I’m off to look at more LA photos/feel sorry for myself/beg my boyfriend to move out there with me… Hope you all have a fab week!! p.s. If you plan on visiting LA, Discover LA is AMAZING! xx
